5 Best Gadgets for Business Travel

Secure your luggage

Not all the important documents and irreplaceable tech that you take on a business trip can fit in your hand luggage, and given that 22m suitcases are lost every year around the world, can you really trust airlines and baggage handlers with sensitive company information? The solution, in part, is the Eviate eTrack, an unobtrusive gadget that tells you where your luggage is at any time, alerts you when your case is on the baggage carousel (so nobody walks away with it by mistake) and even tells you if it has been opened during the journey. The Eviate eTag, meanwhile, is a digital baggage tag which allows passengers to check in at home, skipping long queues at the check-in desk and saving time that could be spent more productively.

Adapt to your environment

Business travellers need to adapt to new environments, both culturally and technologically. For the latter, one cheap and simple solution is the Go Travel Worldwide USB Adapter, which sidesteps the need to squeeze extra wires and plugs into overstuffed suitcases. The adaptor’s four sliding pins alternate between American, British, Australian and European plug configurations, and its two USB ports mean you can save time between meetings by charging multiple devices at the same time.

Type light

On some trips you simply don’t have the space or spare baggage weight for a laptop, and given that you may have a smartphone and tablet in your hand luggage already, a laptop can sometimes seem surplus to requirements. Except, that is, when you have anything longer than an email to type, when the deficiencies of small virtual keyboards are soon made abundantly clear. That’s where the ZAGG Pocket wireless Bluetooth keyboard comes in. It’s 85pc of the size of a desktop keyboard but folds into a travel case that fits snugly into pockets or purses.

Protect your essential technology

Whether it’s sudden turbulence, a bumpy taxi ride or the jolting of a train, working on the move is not always easy, and damaging the technology upon which we all rely these days can render an important business trip all but redundant. So keeping your phone or laptop working is key, and the Tech21 range of cases, featuring state-of-the-art FlexShock protection, means that whatever your gadgets come up against – dodgy driving, clumsy baggage handlers or spilled coffee – it won’t ruin your trip. You can still work when the cases are attached, too, so a dropped computer should never mean a missed business opportunity.

Keep account of your spending

There are many reasons not to take cash or the company credit card with you on business trips. Security issues are one, and unrestrained spending on credit cards can be expensive, and it complicates the expense claims process. One answer is a prepaid travel money card from the likes of PrePay Solutions. This increasingly popular option for small businesses lets you lock in strong exchange rates and load up the exact amount you want to spend abroad (or you will allow an employee to spend), which makes budgeting easier. Extra cash can be reloaded in emergencies, but you remain in control. Travel money cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, bars and at ATMs and, like any other cash or credit card, are chip-and-pin protected.

10 Smartphone Games Can Make You Smarter

For everyone out there who wants to keep their mind sharp over break without having to pull out a dictionary or a periodic table, we’ve compiled a list of smartphone games we think you’ll enjoy.   These range from explicitly educational to general thinking games, and they all have their own elements of fun. The best thing is, they’re all free!

1. Who Becomes Rich?
You may have gathered from the title that “Who Becomes Rich?” is a trivia game, seeing as it looks like the name may have been the result of a foreign developer incorrectly translating “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Despite this, the quality of the game is surprisingly exceptional. With trivia ranging from, “Who said ‘Life is like a box of chocolates’?” to, “Complete the phrase ‘Let the cat out of the…’” this game is both challenging and entertaining, and is sure to test you. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

2. The Brain Age Test
Sadly this is only available for Android, but it’s so good it had to be included on the list. Whether you’re chillin’ at a restaurant or bored at home, this game is a fantastic way to have a little fun and challenge yourself and your friends/family. It tests how well your brain is working by momentarily showing you encircled numbers before covering them up and then asking you to click the covered circles in ascending order according to your memory. It’s much harder than it sounds, but you’ll get better at it as you play. Beware, it’s very addicting.

3. OLO
Not to be confused with YOLO, this incredibly fun multi-player game will test your strategic abilities and give you a chance to tactically challenge your friends in a game quite similar to ping pong.  While it’s probably the least educationally related game on this list, it will definitely keep you on your toes and test your mental abilities under competitive pressure. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

unolingo4. Unolingo
A completely new spin on the word puzzle game genre, Unolingo offers a challenging method of making and solving words. It’s essentially a mix of Sudoku and Scrabble. With 26 empty squares and only one solution per puzzle, you must find a place for every letter of the alphabet through deductive reasoning and critical thinking. It’s a great way to stay sharp over break. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

5. 94 Seconds
A bit like digital charades, this game will tell you the category and first letter of each word, and your goal is to think of as many words as you can in 94 seconds. It’s incredibly addicting and offers an intense, unique challenge. It can be hard at times, but you’ll want to play it again and again. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

6. Miss Spell’s Class
As the clever title implies, in this game you’re going to need to identify incorrectly spelled words. (Get it? Miss spell’s = misspells…) As for any of you English majors or AP high school students out there, I dare you to try it out. Personally I consider myself an excellent speller, but I must admit the first round of this game I got 8 of the 20 words wrong. It’s pretty entertaining, and a great way to learn something in the meantime. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

7. Math Workout
Apparently there’s a YouTube video of someone completing this game in 45 seconds, which I find utterly impossible, but if you’re up to the challenge, try it out. This is an excellent choice for all you math lovers out there. Try to quickly solve math problems in levels ranging from simple addition and subtraction to exponents and roots, and submit your records into the Online World Challenge. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

8. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
Based on the popular television show, this app will give you trivia that’s apparently at a fifth grade level. Not surprisingly most adults have extreme difficulty answering many of these questions correctly.  Do you still remember the things you were supposed to learn in the fifth grade? Check out this game and see just how smart you really are. (Available for Android and iPhone.)

9. Letris 2
Another great example of a unique approach to word puzzles, Letris 2 utilizes the style of the popular arcade game Tetris in its design and gameplay. The goal is to shorten the stacks of letters by spelling out words as more letters fall from above. It’s a very interestingly designed game and will give you hours of entertainment during your vacation, while giving you a chance to exercise your spelling and word-forming abilities. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

10. 1to50
A very simple yet unbelievably addictive game, 1to50 provides quick entertainment and an amazing mental challenge. Click individual numbers successively from 1 to 50 in a matrix of numbers as fast as you can in order to complete the game. It can be frustrating, but you’ll want to keep playing over and over to see how fast you can do it. A very elegantly designed game; I definitely recommend it. (Available on Android and iPhone.)

Spy gadgets

There are a great variety of spy devices, from recorders in pens and cameras in books to flying  RC dragonfly-sized robots with a camera aboard.

Since the spy devices are so numerous, we’ll divide them into subcategories:

  1. Hidden cameras, night photography cameras and similar devices of video surveillance.
  2. Binoculars with custom optics and devices of night vision.
  3. Dictaphones and various listening devices.
  4. Lie detectors, motion sensors and others.

pen with cameraHigh technologies allow miniaturizing spy devices, turning almost every item into a potential risk for our safety. Though it may seem strange, spy gadgets are possible to use for protection. There are devices which are able to detect “bugs” and hidden cameras. This sort of devices may be used for video surveillance in one’s own home.

The main difference of this category is that it is designed mostly not to entertain but to protect or collect information, at will.

Key features:

  • tiny size,
  • protection
  • the ability to mimic,
  • large memory.

1. Tiny size and mimicry  – a good spy gadget is invisible. Today you can find cameras masked as an alarm-clock or a lipstick as well as “bugs” hidden into a network filter or an eraser!

2. Protection – an ideal spy gadget must not break because of water or ground impact. The devices with high physical hardness and program protection (which keeps the information from stealing and breaking in) have especially high market value.

3. Large memory – the working duration of the most of spy devices is determined by their ability to register a certain volume of information, and not by the powerful accumulator as you might think.  As a rule, in micro cameras and “bugs” the memory ends faster than the battery does. That is why, the devices which can provide many hours of listening and video shooting are of special value.

Leaders of sales: The market of spy gadgets is occupied by Chinese manufacturers which do not tend to announce themselves. Due to their illegal production they are hiding under insignificant trading names.  So, you have to choose a product almost blindfold. You may only hope that your friend or any experienced user will advise you what spy gadget to buy.

Prices: Spy gadgets made in China are possible to buy for funny money. Dictaphones and micro cameras are sold for 30-40 $. The models of higher quality will cost 100-200 bucks. Real tracking and surveillance systems cost real money, in addition to prosecution.

Prospects of the field: For the moment the usage of spy gadgets is legally prohibited in most countries. Some legislations leave loopholes, others prohibit totally. As a result, there are no spy products by famous hi-tech brands. The most of devices that are still put on the market are of low quality, they haven’t an adequate system of warranty, but then they have permanent “bugs” and “lags”.

It does not mean that there is no social demand for devices like that. However, the problem of spy things legalization will be solved hard and slowly. Till now the arguments “contra” overweight those of “pro”.

How to Pair Smartphones Using Bluetooth Technology

Bluetooth headsets can connect to your smartphone.

Bluetooth technology allows two devices, such as smartphones, computers, MP3 players or headsets, to quickly connect and begin sharing information within a range of about 10 meters. For security reasons, Bluetooth does not automatically connect whenever two Bluetooth devices are in range of each other. The two devices have to go through a connection process called pairing, where the device owners enter a passkey so that both parties agree to the connection.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth technology on both your devices. Devices such as headsets and computers may always have Bluetooth on, but smartphones may have it off to conserve battery life. Turn it on by going into the “Bluetooth” menu, usually located in the “Settings” or “Connections” menus. There will be an option there to turn the technology on.
  2. Place one of the devices into “pairing” or “discoverable” mode. If you are connecting a headset, follow the headset instructions to put it into pairing mode. If you are connecting two smartphones together, you only need to make one of them discoverable. There will be an option in the Bluetooth menu that will allow you to make the device discoverable.
  3. Search for Bluetooth devices on the smartphone that you did not make discoverable. There will be an option in the “Bluetooth” menu to “Scan,” “Search” or “Add.” The smartphone will search for a few seconds and then list all of the nearby Bluetooth devices.
  4. Select the device that you want to connect from the list of nearby Bluetooth devices.
  5. Enter a passcode, or PIN, to complete the connection. If you are connecting to a headset, the passcode should be “0000.” If it is not, you need to check the manual for that specific headset to get the passcode. If you are connecting two smartphones, or a smartphone and a computer, you can enter any passcode that you like, but you have to enter the same code on both devices. Once the passcode has been entered, the devices are paired.

How to Get GPS Navigation on My Smartphone

Your mobile GPS service is not available where you do not have cell phone coverage.

You can use your smartphone to get GPS navigation complete with satellite tracking to help you on important trips. Mobile GPS is offered by a variety of vendors giving you the option to choose the service with amenities that best suit you. In order to take advantage of GPS services on your smartphone, you must have a data plan with your service provider. Advanced GPS programs are available for a fee, but many free applications also exist.

  1. Browse the main menu on your smartphone for the icon labeled “Applications.” Click this icon.
  2. Type “GPS” into the search bar. A list of GPS applications will appear. Some may require a subscription to the service in addition to a fee to download. However, you can also find a “Maps” application that offers directions as a feature rather than the main function of the program. These applications are typically free and allow you to identify your position on the map using satellite technology.
  3. Click “Download” then “OK” when prompted. Once the application download is complete, the GPS program will be added to the desktop of your smart phone. Set up your GPS by entering your current location and a list of favorites under the “Settings” menu of your new application.

How to Make Simple Spy Stuff

A spy needs super-secret equipment and techniques to solve mysteries and discover secrets.

Authentic super-secret spy gear is expensive and hard to come by. However, you can use simple spy secrets to make spy stuff at home. Help your kids compile a spy kit for play, or make one for yourself, as part of a costume. Use the spy gear to solve a secret mystery, or just for fun.

Fingerprint Powder

  1. Put a sprinkle of starch powder onto a porcelain dish.
  2. Hold a second, heat-safe porcelain dish over a candle flame. Allow the soot from the flame to collect on the dish.
  3. Scrape the soot off the dish with a knife and mix it with the starch powder to create fingerprint powder.
  4. Dust the powder over fingerprints to reveal them.
  5. Cover the dusted fingerprint with clear tape and lift it up gently to remove the print.

Book Safe

  1. Find a book with a hard cover that you don’t mind cutting up.
  2. Pick a page near the front of the book, but not directly at the front, to open the book to.
  3. Use an X-acto knife or a box cutter to begin cutting the pages after the page you turned to. Begin on the right-hand page and cut a square out from the interior about 1 inch from each edge of the page.
  4. Continue cutting down through the pages until your hole is deep enough. Do not go all the way through to the end of the book.
  5. Store items in the empty space you cut out.

Invisible Ink

  1. Use a toothpick or the pointy end of a feather as your pen, and lemon juice as your ink.
  2. Write out your message in the lemon juice. When the juice dries, your message will be invisible.
  3. Reveal the message by holding a hair dryer over it or holding the area over a candle flame. Make sure to keep the paper far enough from the flame so it is heated, but not burned.

How to Make Spy Gadgets out of Everyday Items

A drinking glass used as a listening device is a classic spy technique.

Agent 86 of the “Get Smart” TV series had a shoe phone. James Bond had a camera built into a cigarette lighter. The list goes on. But the spy world of today is getting sneakier. You don't have a chief to present you with necessary spy gadgets—you have to do it solo. You can make spy gadgets out of everyday items … and there will be no paper trail of your covert activities. You just have to use your noodle … or your wristwatch … or maybe some duct tape. You get the picture.

Eavesdropping Gadget

  1. Insert a fresh 9-volt battery in a high-quality long-range walkie-talkie set. Test the set to make sure both units are functioning properly. Tear off a small piece of duct tape and tape one unit's talk button down so that it will remain in the “talk” setting. This is the device you will use for step 2.
  2. Hide the rigged walkie-talkie within the room in which you wish to eavesdrop. Ideas could be within jacket pockets, plants or behind books. Be cautious not to set the walkie-talkie beneath a cushion or in a drawer that might muffle voices.
    Plants disguise spy devices effectively.
  3. Sit in the vicinity of the rigged walkie-talkie, where you have a clear connection. Hide your walkie-talkie listening unit in your pocket, beneath a hat or in a purse as you listen.
Try to look inconspicuous when eavesdropping.
  4. Calculate the amount of time you are eavesdropping and the battery life that is being used on the unit that is sitting in the talk position as you are eavesdropping. When the battery drains, it will emit static and its disguise will be discovered. Be sure to retrieve the unit before the battery is drained.

Gadget Jacket

  1. Cut four small Velcro squares. Sew two squares under the jacket collar on the left and two under the collar on the right side. These should be sewn along the collar line. The Velcro will allow you to choose from a variety of tiny gadgets that can be hidden beneath the collar for spying by using the double-stick tape for easy on-off removal to change gadgets as needed.
What's a spy without his gadget jacket?
  2. Mount a square of Velcro on a mini-light with a light at the end of a flexible antenna. You can easily hide this beneath your collar for a hands-free light when needed.
The wrong weather to wear your spy jacket? No problem. Just keep it handy.
  3. Glue a small, round magnet onto the side of the flexible light's end. Remove a mirror from a small compact and glue it to the magnet. Mount the mirror on the end of the shaft. This gadget will give you an adjustable rearview mirror for spying.
As long as the jacket has a collar, no one will know what you're up to.
  4. Mount a mini voice recorder beneath the collar. This gadget will give you the ability to record conversations. You can also place it in a jacket pocket or within the sleeve.
"I've been a cosmetics salesman for 40 years."

Hidden Camera Gadget

  1. Gently cut the back out of the large box of candy.
Getting the photo you need is like taking candy from a baby.
  2. Hide the camera inside the large box of candy. Position the camera. Mark the position on the box where the shutter will be. Cut a small hole where the lens is positioned so that it can receive light. Position the camera again inside the box so you can activate the camera's button.
Candy boxes are easy disguises for spies.
  3. Insert the small candy box beside the camera within the large box. Cut a hole in the end of the large box and the small box so that you can actually pour candy out of the boxes into your hand and eat it now and then. This makes for a clever disguise. You can hold it on your lap and snap photos or hold it to your face and pretend to be reading the ingredients as you take photos.
The camera-candy box gadget is much better than the newspaper-covering-the-face method of disguise.

Other Everyday Gadgets

  1. Remove a battery from an extra flashlight to use as a secret compartment.
  2. Remove a button from the gadget jacket and replace it with a mini compass. You can sew a button over it to disguise it or a snip of material that you removed from inside of the jacket or sleeve.
  3. Remove the bottom of a boot heel to use the hollow inside to hide items such as maps, compasses and more.

How to Make Spy Gear for Free

Try the spy trick of eavesdropping with the open end of a cup to a wall.

Help your kids feel like James Bond by making your own spy gear for free. You can create this gear with items found around the house and even in your kids’ rooms. These are simple enough to create with your children. You or your kids will be able to keep hidden treasures out of sight and send secret messages just by using household items such as vinegar, a book and a marble.

Spy Book

  1. Find an old, thick hardcover book in your collection at home. Look for one that is thick enough to hide the belongings you want to keep secret. Be sure it is a book no one uses anymore.
An old book can be used as a safe for some of your keepsakes.
  2. Open the book one quarter of the way in, to about page 40. Draw a rectangle with a ruler and a pencil about an inch in from edges lengthwise and top and bottom of book.
  3. Use a utility knife to cut into the rectangle. Start on the side toward the edge of the book, cutting through several pages about an inch deep, depending on how big the book is and what size objects you would like to store in the book.
  4. Cut all sides of the rectangle to create a box inside the book. Put the things you would like to keep secret inside the book. Close the book and place it back in your bookshelf.

  1. Cut a small rectangle on the bottom of the longer side of the empty carton with a utility knife. Cut the rectangle about a half inch from the bottom of the box. You will look into this hole when the box is finished. The rectangle should be about an inch high and 1 1/2 inches wide and about 1/4 inch in from each side. Turn the carton onto the opposite side and cut the exact same side box at the top of the side about a quarter down from the top.
  2. Glue a small mirror approximately 2 inches by 1 inch inside the bottom of the box at a 45-degree angle toward the window. Glue the second mirror into the inside top of the box at a 45-degree angle pointing toward the top window of the box.
  3. Paint your periscope dark and light green colors with a paintbrush to camouflage your spy periscope. Look into the bottom window into the mirror to spy at higher angles.

Keyhole Spy Gadget

  1. Cut a piece of black construction paper 8 inches long by 5 inches wide with scissors. Place a clear marble in the middle of the paper and roll the paper lengthwise tightly around the marble to make a tube.
A clear marble can be used as part of a spy tool.
  2. Tape the roll together. Blow into the tube until the marble is poking halfway out the other end of the tube.
  3. Hold the tube up to the keyhole with the marble touching the keyhole and look through the other end of the tube. The image will be upside down, but you will be able to see into the room behind the closed door.

Invisible Ink

  1. Put an ounce of lemon juice or vinegar into a bowl. Dip your paintbrush into the bowl. Write a message with the brush onto bright white paper.
  2. Let the message dry completely until it’s invisible. Write another message with pen or pencil on the paper. This second message will be used to distract people from the invisible ink. Write something mundane such as a grocery list so no one suspects there is another message on the paper.
  3. Give the note to a friend. Quietly tell her to hold it up to a light bulb but not close enough that it could burn. The lemon juice message will appear as the paper heats.

How to Sync Your Smartphone and Your PC

As you run around in your busy life, it is impractical to leave your important files and telephone numbers stored separately in your Smartphone and computer. You can use the following steps to sync your Smartphone and your PC if you are using Microsoft Windows XP or earlier versions of the Windows operating systems.

  1. Locate a USB port on your computer. Newer computers often have a couple of these ports somewhere on the front of your machine. If there are no ports in the front, locate a USB port on the back of your computer tower. Avoid using a port on your keyboard as these typically transfer data at a much slower rate.
  2. Connect your Smartphone to your computer. Take the sync cable that came with your Smartphone and plug one end into a USB port on your computer and plug the other end into your Smartphone.
  3. Use the synchronization software on your computer. Smartphones come with a CD that you can use to install a program onto your computer to sync your devices. Double click on the software icon and launch the sync program on your computer.
  4. Click on the Synchronization Wizard to initialize the syncing process. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided by the Wizard.
  5. Choose the data that you wish to synchronize. Find the files and folders that you would like to synchronize your Smartphone with your computer or vice versa. Select each file using the wizard User Interface by clicking on the file name once.
  6. Click the Finish icon to complete the process. Your Smartphone and personal computer should be in sync if you have completed the process properly.

How to Geocache With a Smartphone

Typical geocache containers will have small treasures to trade and an official log to sign.

Geochaching is treasure hunting by Global Positioning System (GPS), a high-tech game played worldwide. “Caches” are hidden and found by geocachers; some contain treasures and others simply a logbook to sign. With geocaches hidden in space, on mountains and in parks, there are caches to be found by treasure hunters of all abilities—and now anyone with a GPS-enabled smartphone can play.GPS enabled smartphones have made geocaching more convenient by eliminating the need to carry a separate GPS device in addition to a phone or access a computer.

  1. Click into the settings on your smartphone, locate the GPS or location setting and turn on the GPS feature.
A GPS-enabled smartphone is ideal for geocaching.
  2. Download a geocaching application to your smartphone from your service provider’s application market.

There are many different geocaching applications to choose from; read the system requirements and user reviews before downloading an application to your phone.

  3. Open the geocaching application when the download is complete ,and follow the setup instructions. You will be prompted to enter your username and password for your existing geocaching account; if you do not have an account, the instructions will specify where to sign up. The setup is complete once you have logged in.

  1. Open the geocaching application and select “live map” to locate caches in your immediate area. For a list of caches in your surrounding area, click “nearby.”
  2. Select a cache to hunt from the nearby list or from the live map. Then click “cache details” for information on the cache’s type, distance, difficulty, terrain, attributes and coordinates—all important factors to consider when selecting a cache to find.
  3. Click the menu button from the cache details screen and select “Navigate;” here you will be prompted to choose your preferred method of navigation from the standard “compass,” “turn by turn,” “show on map” and “radar” options.
  4. Write down the coordinates of your beginning location from the navigation screen and add them to the cache detail screen under “add waypoint.” Your way point will serve as the return directions to your starting place.
  5. Follow the application navigator to the cache’s hidden location.

Click the menu button from the navigation screen to change your method of navigation at anytime.

  6. Log your find by clicking the menu button from the cache details screen and selecting “log visit.” Leave a comment to share your experience, report the condition of the cache and confirm its existence.

How to Think Up a Great Domain Name for your Website

Domain names that closely match your site's content help add trust and professionalism.
A website’s domain name essentially represents its overall purpose and the content it delivers. Whether you base your site on educational content, current events or entertainment, coming up with a reliable name is crucial for its image. Thus, you must consider one or multiple variables that can ultimately help you register the most appropriate domain name for your content.

  1. Register a domain name that summarizes your content concisely, as fewer words generally help people remember it more effectively.
  2. Take your website’s style or voice into consideration. Many entertainment sources dedicated to random photos, videos and jokes tend to use nonsensical satire in their domain name. Conversely, if your website focuses on a specific niche, consider a name that closely represents your site’s purpose, such as “Affordable Gaming Gadgets.” Analyze the type of message your domain name should essentially send to your followers.
  3. Decide whether your website is solely designed for users or partially for search engines as well. If targeting a particular keyword, for example, many administrators rely on exact-match domains by registering the main keyword as the site’s name. This method helps search engines find or rank your website for a particular phrase, especially if it is not highly competitive.
  4. Take your target audience into account. If you are basing your site on pop culture, for example, include a phrase that is generally considered hip. However, note that many words, particularly slang words, are usually not evergreen, which means they may not be relevant in a few months or years. Register phrases that may be more widely accepted, such as “Cool” or “Paparazzi.”
  5. Target your website’s geographical region. Include towns, cities or any form of identification if targeting specific areas. Likewise, if you focus primarily on any particular language, register a domain name in its native tongue. Such methods help users relate to and connect with the information you provide more effectively.

Ten Gadgets That’ll Make Unexpected, Unique, and Exciting Holiday Gifts

The hardest part of the holiday shopping is finding something that stands out from the crowd. It’s tricky to surprise anyone on Christmas day, for example, when you’ve wrapped an iPad, a 32GB flash drive, a gaming mouse, or a Kindle. Everyone knows about that stuff. That’s why I combed the bleeding edge of tech for these 10 cool but less well known products.

Cobra DriveHD. There’s a good chance that you only know two or three facts about Russia, and thanks to YouTube one of those facts is that everyone drives with a dash cam in their car there. Well, you can bring a little Russia to a loved one this year by giving the gift of a DriveHD dash cam. Cobra offers several DriveHD models, but I am partial to the CDR 840, which has built-in GPS that prints the exact coordinates of each leg of your trip right on the video. The DriveHD comes with an 8GB card that’s good for about 2 hours of video, continuously over-written so you always have a record of the last few hours of your travels. The video is sharp, high definition, with a wide viewing angle. And it can be yours for the giving for about $150.

Ozobot. This programmable robot is so adorable, and so cleverly conceived, it’s impossible not to love it. So what is Ozobot? Imagine a tiny bot that is designed to follow lines drawn on paper or on a computer screen (like an iPad). Different line patterns changes the Ozobot’s behavior — add a blue, red, and blue dash within a line, for example, makes the bot turn around and go back the way it came. That means Ozobot is fun and easy for kids to experiment with, and you can use Ozobot in free play or to race and solve puzzles (some of which are kindly provided in the free iPad accessory app). Really, it’s hard to overemphasize how great Ozobot is as a high-tech toy that doubles as a teaching tool. You can buy bots for $50 each or get a two-pack for $100. ozobot

Plantronics Rig. Most folks think that headphones are the best for immersive activities like gaming and music. The only problem? Most wrap-around headphones are designed to engulf you in sound and mask real-world audio. The Plantronics Rig is a gaming headphone that includes a second audio input which you can dial into the primary audio, hearing as much or as little of that source as you like. Imagine, for example, being able to play a game while listening to a baby monitor in the background. $99.

S+. Fitness bands that offer sleep tracking are all the rage these days, but S+, which is short for “Sleep Plus,” is novel in that it isn’t worn at all; it’s a small device that sits on your bed stand and works in conjunction with your iPhone to help you track your sleep and learn how to improve.  S+ is really effective – it uses sensors to measure your respiration and restlessness from a distance, and in the morning it makes genuinely useful recommendations. For example, it can tell if you’re waking in the middle of the night because of nearby noises, or if light coming in the window is disturbing sleep in the morning. S+ can also help lull you to sleep with soothing sounds and coach you to better sleep. Anyone trying to sleep better or improve their health will appreciate the $150 S+.

SnapScan iX100. There was a time when everyone needed a scanner. All the time. And the scanners we had to choose from were clumsy, hard to set up, and expensive. At least these days, as our reliance on scanners has gone down, they’ve gotten far easier to work with as well. If you know someone who still needs to scan documents or photos, give them the SnapScan iX100. It’s a small, lightweight mobile scanner that fits in a briefcase or backpack, is completely wireless, and connects to any device – PC, laptop, smartphone, or tablet – using the local Wi-Fi network. No Wi-Fi? The scanner creates its own ad-hoc network so you can connect directly. Scans are fast and high quality, and you can give the gift of easy mobile scanning for $229.

Logitech Type +. Everyone knows someone who swears by his or her iPad, but complains it’s too hard to enter a lot of text using the on-screen keyboard. For that individual, I offer you Logitech’s Type+, one of the coolest iPad keyboards money can buy. It’s a thin-but-rugged case with a magnetic strip built in. When you unfold the case, the iPad snaps into position like a laptop screen, with the integrated keyboard laid out on the table in front of you. The Bluetooth keyboard springs to life when the iPad touches the magnet, so there’s nothing to remember to turn on or off. It’s available in several colors and sells for $99.

Chamberlain MyQ Garage. I hear what your dad is saying: He can already control his alarm system, thermostat, and front door using his iPhone. If only there was some way to open and close the garage door from his phone as well. Actually, there is. The Chamberlain MyQ Garage is a gadget you attach to the ceiling of your garage and plug it into your garage door opener. It connects with your home’s Wi-Fi and lets you operate your garage door from a simple iPhone app from literally anywhere you have Internet access. As long as your Wi-Fi works in your garage, MyQ should work fine, and of course your original garage door openers continue to work as well. Now you can check your phone at work or while on vacation in another state to see if someone forgot to close the garage door, and you can open the door to let someone in. Just $129 to automate dad’s garage.

MyQ Garage App in Hand

Equil Smartpen 2. Despite the presence of Evernote and all sorts of other text tools, writing things by hand still feels the most natural – and has been proven to cause the best retention. That’s where the Equil Smartpen 2 comes in; it’s a pen that you can use to write with real ink on ordinary paper. But working with a clip that you clamp to the top of the page, the pen captures what you write in digital form, and sends the converted text to your PC, phone or tablet.  It’s easy to use and very portable – great for both students and working professionals. $170.

TYLT Energi+ Backpack. I love the Energi+, a high tech backpack with oodles of zippered pockets and compartments, along with a massive Lithium Ion battery that can top off a tablet like the iPad or charge your smartphone about 4 times. The backpack has passthroughs for charging cables that run throughout the bag, so you can configure it to your liking. It has slots for a laptop, tablet, and smartphone, along with a general purpose section for whatever you like. It’s available for $200.

TIVO Mega. Last, but not least: TIVO claims that it’s so big, it’s almost inappropriate. While I am not entirely sure what that means, this much is true: The TIVO Mega DVR was engineered to appeal to the biggest TV and movie fanatics out there. The machine’s 24TB hard drive can store 26,000 hours of video (that’s standard video – or 4,000 hours of HD video), and its 6 tuners can record 6 shows at once. If you have $5000 to spend on your favorite couch potato, they will love you forever. On the other hand, I’m not sure that TIVO even expects anyone to really buy this monstrosity. It exists more for corporate bragging rights than anything else. That said, if you are wealthy and want to buy this for me, I will gladly accept it.

How to Add Gadgets to My Web Page

Adding gadgets to your web page can make for a better user experience.

If you own a website, you can improve it by adding interactive components. Maybe you already offer polls or quizzes, or Flash video or the ability for users to log in and manage their own user page. You might offer games. You might offer forums where people can sign in and take part in your online community. Interactive components like these have been around for years, but you can add new means of interactivity and fun to your site with Google “gadgets.” They consist of bits of code that can turn your website into a truly unique, fun piece of online real estate.

  1. Visit the home page for Google gadgets (find the link under Resources) and peruse the many gadgets, which include games, weather trackers, news aggregators, and radio stations.
  2. When you find a gadget you want, click on the “Add to my web page” button beneath the gadget’s sample image.
  3. Adjust the settings in the “preview” pane. The Preview pane will include the different settings for a given gadget. Often you can change colors and add borders so the gadget will match your site settings.
  4. Set the size of the gadget so it fits your web page. If your web page measures 400 pixels wide by 600 pixels in height, you’ll want a gadget that fits within that page without crowding it. In the left side of the Preview pane, you can set the height to something like 300 pixels and the width to 200 pixels. The gadget will automatically be set to that size, and you can adjust the settings until the height and width fits your site perfectly.
  5. Click “Get the code.” The HTML code powers the gadget on your website. Look for the button beneath the settings panel.
  6. Copy the code by first double-clicking it. Once you select the code, right-click it, and select “Copy” from the window.
  7. Paste the code onto your website. You will need to open your HTML web page using a text editor or freeware HTML editor. Paste the copied code in the HTML page where you want the gadget to appear.
  8. You will then need to use a file transfer protocol (FTP) program to log onto your server and upload your new web page with the gadget. Enter your website name, your server user name and your password into the FTP program. Once the FTP program connects to your server, upload the file into the public directory, so people can view the page and enjoy the gadget.

How to Become a Mobile Phone Distributor

Selling mobile phones can be a lucrative business opportunity.

Cellphone sales continue to increase exponentially, making the opportunity to sell new phones an appealing one for an entrepreneur. For those with a knack for sales and a love for gadgets, becoming a mobile phone distributor may be the perfect business outlet. It’s important to keep your target customer in mind when starting this type of business and to remember that new gadgets are constantly replacing the old ones. This presents a continuing profit opportunity for you.

  1. Network with local businesses to whom you would like to sell cellphones and find out how many they would like to purchase. Estimate how many you think you could sell in a month through your own retail sales. Remember that cellphone styles change frequently, so don’t invest in a huge number of phones you may not be able to sell.
  2. Arrange to purchase your cellphones directly from a manufacturer, through a network, such as T-Mobile or Tracfone, or from a wholesale distributor in your region. How many cellphones you must order at once will depend on the contract you negotiate with the provider.
  3. Mark up the prices on the phones to a price that includes a profit for you.
  4. Sell your cellphones and any accessories, such as faceplates, carrying cases or ear plugs, from your own retail location, through the Internet or directly to retail locations by being the distributor for grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations and other locations.

How to Buy The Best Geek Gadgets and Techie Gifts for Techies

Buying gifts for techie friends, husbands or relatives is not easy – especially if you are a not a “techie” yourself. Common gifts for techies are geek gadgets, high tech equipment, and anything computer related. Although techie gift ideas are considered geeky, they can often be quite fun at the same time, after all techie geeks have more to their personality than just their technical side. Before buying gifts for techies, read the article below to help you find the best gift for your techie that range in price for expensive to cheap.

  1. Think about the person behind the “techie”.

First of all, before generalizing all techie geeks into one lump category, remember that each techie is unique and has unique interests and gift preferences. Yes, they all like technology, but they each use technology differently. For example, the best techie gift idea for a techie boy friend or husband will be a different type of gift that for your techie brother.

  2. Stay away from commonplace techie gadgets

Do not think that every electronic gadget makes a good techie gift. Electronics and gadgets that are readily available do not make great techie gift ideas for a techy because, most probably, your techie has a preference of exactly which one he or she wants. For example, don’t buy a digital camera for your techie friend without knowing exactly which type of digital camera they want. There are so many types of digital cameras to choose from that you are bound to mess up.

Of course, if you know that your techie friend is looking for a particular gadget you can buy the best techie gift by simply asking him or her which one they want. It won’t be a surprise, but your techie will appreciate it.

  3. Choose the newest and coolest for a really exciting techie gift

If you want to get your techie really excited, listen to the news and find out about the newest technical gadget that everyone is waiting for. Place your order immediately when the product is available and be one of the first ones to order it and watch your techie’s reaction when you give them the gift. Of course this option can be a little expensive.

  4. Choose a techie watch as a safe techie gift

In most cases, a special techie watch makes a safe gift for a techie or geek. There are many types of techie watches – look for one with unique geeky features that your techie would appreciate. Choose between watches that double as cell phones or video cameras. For a computer programming geek you can even choose a watch with binary time display.

  5. Choose a romantic techy gift for your partner

If you are buying a techie gift for a husband, wife, boy friend or girl friend, you can buy a geeky romantic gift for your bedroom. There are many options such as exotic electrical lighting and electrical candle lights to choose from.

  6. Stay on budget and buy a cheap techie gift if you are low on cash

Geek and tech gifts come in all different sizes and price ranges. You don’t have to spend a fortune just because you are buying an electrical gadget. For a cheap techie gift you can choose an accessory for a cell phone or computer that goes for under 20 dollars or even under 10 dollars.

  7. Think science fiction if your techie is a “treky”

Although the generalization is not always true, tech geeks are often science fiction fans. If you know your tech friend likes movies then buy them a poster, t-shirt – or better yet – a techie mousepad from the latest science fiction movie.

How to Start a Home Spy Business

More and more people are interested in purchasing surveillance equipment for their homes.
As surveillance technology keeps advancing to become more and more reliable and discreet, an ever increasing number of businesses and private individuals are becoming interested in purchasing things like security cameras, computer monitoring software, and protection equipment for their homes and offices. These potential customers have a diverse array of concerns; some suspect their spouses of infidelity, some are interested in covertly observing their nannies, some are concerned about employee theft, and others just want to know how their employees spend their days at work. Whatever the reason, surveillance equipment is currently in high demand. Consider meeting this demand with a home spy business of your own.

  1. Get a job with a company that installs home security systems. In order to start a business selling home spy equipment, you need to understand how this equipment works. You can gain valuable experience working with someone who has experience in the home security business. This person can also become a valuable contact once you start your spy equipment business, referring customers to you and possibly working with you installing the equipment you sell. This job experience will also give you an opportunity to learn about your customer base.
  2. Decide whether you want to sell your spy equipment online, in a storefront location, or both. Starting an online business is considerably more simple than opening a storefront. An online business has lower overhead costs and potentially can market to customers around the world, whereas a storefront has a limited customer base.
  3. Decide whether you want to deal in general security and surveillance equipment, or whether you want to specialize in a particular type of equipment. You can run a shop that offers a vast selection of spy equipment, or you can focus on selling equipment designed especially for a specific purpose, such as voice recording or computer monitoring. If you want a general store, you will have to familiarize yourself with the general categories of equipment on the market, whereas if you run a specialty shop you will have to become an expert on the differences between specific manufacturers of the same item.
  4. Familiarize yourself with laws regarding the buying and selling of security and surveillance equipment. Not every item that you may be interested in carrying is legal to buy or sell in every state. If you have an online shop, you will need to learn whether your item is legal to sell in every state you do business with, as well as whether your item can be shipped by regular post.
  5. Obtain a business license. even if you have an online shop, you need a business license and tax payer identification number.
  6. Develop relationships with vendors. If you are selling your spy equipment at retail cost, you will have to find manufacturers to buy it from. Once you decide what equipment you want your store to carry, contact the manufacturers to learn about how you can become a distributor. In some instances, you will have to purchase your equipment from a distributor. If this is the case, you will need to contact a number of distributors to find out who can give you the best prices.
  7. Get a professional to design your website. If you are selling merchandise over the internet, your customers need to trust you. A professionally designed website looks far more polished and legitimate than one you put together yourself, and this will make your customers feel more comfortable entering their credit card information into your site.
  8. Market your shop. Write letters of introduction and distribute business cards to security installation businesses. Learn what the most important trade and hobbyist publications in the security and surveillance field are and pay to run advertisements in them. Join internet forums related to your field and market your website there. Once you get your business off the ground, it may pay to hire a marketing consultant to help you market your website more effectively.

How to Embed Google Gadgets in PowerPoint

PowerPoint presentations are commonly used in business.
Google Gadgets are widgets for webpages. The user selects a Gadget from the Google Gadget inventory; customizes it and then copies the code into their webpage. 11. Click “Create From File,” then click “Browse.”
  12. Locate the recently created HTML file on the computer. Click “OK.” The Google Gadget will now be embedded into the PowerPoint document.

Homemade Spy Gear for Kids

Kids Playing Spy

If kids are having fun playing spy games, why not give them a little equipment to make their spy play even more exciting. There are many items that can be used to make homemade spy gear for kids to enjoy for hours on end. Make a book safe, write secret messages with invisible ink and even lift real fingerprints with fingerprint powder.

A Book Safe

  • Show kids how to hide their smallest treasures and valuables. A book is a place that many would never think to look to find valuables. That is what makes a book the perfect safe. Find an old hardcover book with several hundred pages that no one minds cutting. Open the beginning pages of the book (to approximately page 10). Lay the book flat and on the right-hand page, draw a rectangle approximately 1 inch inside the outer edge of the entire page. Hold the book so that all of the pages under this page are lined up perfectly. To avoid injury, an adult should hold a ruler up to one of the sides of the rectangle and use an X-acto knife to cut along the edge, cutting through the multiple pages underneath this page. Cut down about 1 inch into the pages. Repeat with the other sides of the rectangle and remove the cut out rectangles of pages when the cutting is finished. There will be a rectangular hole in the pages that is large enough to hold small objects while the book is closed and sitting on a shelf.

Invisible Ink

  • Squeeze some juice from a lemon and place it into a small cup. Use a piece of recycled newsprint paper for best results. Dip a small artist’s paintbrush into the lemon juice and carefully write out a secret message. For even better results, write something else on the paper with a regular pen so that your secret message will not be suspected or detected. To read the secret message, it is necessary to apply heat to the paper. This must be done carefully to avoid hazard and injury, and should be done with adult supervision. Either hold the paper above a candle flame (far enough above so that it does not burn) or lightly iron the paper with an iron set to low. The heat will cause the lemon juice writing to turn brown become visible.

Fingerprint Powder

  • Dust for prints just like the pros with this homemade fingerprint powder. Gather together some cornstarch, a candle, two small ceramic dishes and a small spatula. An adult should supervise and help with this project. Place a small amount of cornstarch into one dish. Light the candle and hold the other dish so that it is in the flame. This will create soot in the dish. When there is enough soot to remove from the dish, scrape it out of this dish and into the other dish with the cornstarch. Continue this process until you have equal amounts of soot and cornstarch. Mix the two together to fully incorporate them. When it is time to use the powder, sprinkle it over a fingerprint and then blow it away, which will reveal the fingerprint.

How to Make Spy Gadgets Out of Household Items for Kids

Children enjoy using their imagination and with films like “Spy Kids” and cartoons such as “Totally Spies!” homemade “spy gear” can be used for games or as a creative outlet. Using tools and supplies found around the house, parents can help children create a safe from an unused book to hide their toys, a periscope for them to look around room corners and invisible ink to send and decode secret messages.

Book Safe

  1. Find an old, hardcover book that you are no longer interested in reading or one that’s ready for recycling. The thicker and larger the book, the more items you can be store inside it.
  2. Open the book and turn the pages until you are approximately a fourth of the way through the pages.
  3. Draw a rectangle on the right hand page using a marker or pen, but do not get too close to the book’s binding as cutting into the book’s binding will cause it to fall apart.
  4. Have an adult cut along each line carefully using a utility knife. To avoid leaving ragged edges, cut only a few pages with each knife stroke. You can cut a space all the way to the back cover, or cut fewer pages for a more shallow space.
  5. Place whatever items you want to hide into your new book safe and store it on a bookshelf. This is called hiding in plain sight.

  1. Cut a two-inch square out of the end of a cardboard mailing tube, like those used to roll and send posters.
  2. Cut two-inch diagonal slits at each corner of the square and flip the tube around, repeating the square cuts and the diagonal slits at this end but on the opposite side.
  3. Glue mirrors to the squares along the periscope and inside each slit, with the latter mirrors facing the bottom. Add another small mirror to the bottom cut and use duct tape or dark opaque masking tape to seal up the ends of the tube to prevent light from entering.
  4. Look through one end of the tube and it’ll reflect images like a periscope.

Invisible Ink

  1. Cut a lemon from the refrigerator or pantry into wedges and squeeze the juice into a glass.
  2. Write out your secret message on recycled paper using the lemon juice and a make-up applicator brush and allow it to dry completely.
  3. Deliver your secret message and have the recipient hold it up near a heat source. If you hold it near a source with a flame, be careful not to let the paper touch it or it will burn.

How to Make Spy Gadgets Out of Paper

Send encrypted messages using this spy gadget.

Spies are everywhere, it seems, from movie screens to books to current news headlines. It is no surprise that playing at spies is a childhood favorite, in part because of the variety of fun gadgets that can be used in such games. Everyone loves a good secret, and with this simple homemade spy gadget that can be constructed out of paper, children can share encoded messages with their friends for hours of constructive entertainment.

Spy Code Strips

  1. Cut two strips of plain paper about 1 inch wide and 8 1/2 inches long.
  2. Create a random pattern of holes along the center of the paper strips, using the hole punch. The holes should not overlap or be evenly spaced and should be identical on both strips. This is your code strip.
  3. Lay one of the strips with holes over a piece of paper, lining it up cleanly against the left edge of the paper. Use it to encode your message: one letter per hole, until your message is complete. If your message is longer than the number of holes, move the strip down a line and continue, making sure to always use the same side of the strip.
  4. Fill in the spaces between your message with letters and numbers. Give your partner the other code strip so they can decode the message.

How to Make Homemade Spy Gadgets

Turn lemon juice into invisible ink for writing secret messages.

From Harriet the Spy to James Bond, spy gear is sure to be a hit with your children. Let them make their own spy gadgets with items you can find or recycle around the house for hours of fun at no cost at all. From secret messages to invisible ink and fingerprint technology, your kids can bring excitement and intrigue to their play. Whether you are filling a rainy afternoon or planning a birthday party complete with dark glasses and trench coats, try these simple projects to make sure your kids are bowing to your super secret-agent powers.

  1. Use lemon juice to send secret messages. Remember that blank paper is suspicious, so write something innocuous in standard ink. Professional spies suggest a grocery list. A pointed makeup applicator can work well as a pen with lemon juice, but many household items will allow you to write legibly in invisible ink. This is one of the easiest homemade spy gadgets. Apply heat to read your message.
  2. Make fingerprint powder for your spy kit. This homemade spy gadget will require adult assistance. Pour a small amount of cornstarch into a porcelain or stoneware saucer. Take a second saucer and apply a flame using a long-handled candle lighter or candle. Soot will quickly accumulate. Scrape the soot into the cornstarch and stir. Keep adding soot until you have a gray powder. Dust fingerprints with this powder and lift off with clear tape.
  3. Make a periscope to see over fences and around corners. Cut a 2-inch square in one end of your cardboard mailing tube with a craft knife. Cut a 2-inch diagonal slit at each corner of the square. Repeat on the other end of the mailing tube, cutting into the opposite side of the tube. Mount mirrors onto 3-by-4-inch cardboard squares with glue and insert into the slits in your tube. The mirrors should face one another. Use duct tape to close up the ends of your tube.
  4. Turn a pair of ordinary swim goggles into spy goggles. This homemade spy gadget is all about looks, but can be fun for children. Use a permanent marker to color in the lenses of your spy goggles. Avoid washable markers for this project.
  5. Add to the fun of homemade spy gadgets with an inexpensive digital camera or webcam hidden in a stuffed toy or other item. You might also consider passing along old cellular phones or Bluetooth headsets to your little spies.

How to Build Homemade Electronic Spy Gadgets

Pinhole cameras are an excellent way to hide a surveillance device.
With the wide availability of spy equipment such as pinhole cameras and rechargeable mini stick cameras, the average consumer can make a spy gadget out of almost anything. A simple Starbucks coffee cup can be turned into a creative ultra compact and concealed spy device. Since coffee cups are generally accepted for people to carry around everywhere, this is an excellent way to conceal a spy camera from view and gives plenty of versatility on where you can bring it or set it down to record.

  1. Use the awl to poke a small hole within the Starbucks logo on the side of the coffee cup. By placing the hole in the logo, it will effectively mask its existence as opposed to using the white area of the cup.
  2. Place the Spy Camera Stick on the inside of the cup and line up the lens with the hole. If you need to make the hole larger, use the awl tool and carefully widen the lens hole. Tape the Spy Camera Stick to the inside of the coffee cup. Make certain to test the video capability to ensure the lens is properly aligned within the cup.
  3. Fill the inside of the cup 3/4 full with cotton balls and pack them tight. This will help to prevent the Spy Camera Stick from moving around and loosening the tape.
  4. Place the lid on the coffee cup and be sure not to cover the hole with your hand if you’re using this camera while mobile. Since the vast majority of mini spy cameras offer hours of video with every charge, there should be no problem with activating the camera inside the cup and leaving it to record.

How to Unlock a Smartphone

Your phone can be unlocked with a code.

Unlocked smart phones are very useful to have because they can be used on any wireless network instead of just one. This will give you more flexibility in choosing what type of plan you want in addition to being able to switch between carriers. Another advantage is travel. Having an unlocked smart phone will allow you to use your phone in different countries, through use of a SIM card and prepaid minutes or by subscribing to a local calling plan. The following are methods of unlocking a smart phone by yourself.

Using a Code

  1. Navigate to a website that offers codes to unlock your smart phone, such as, or Most of these sites will charge a small fee for the code.
  2. Go to “Settings > Options > Advanced Options > SIM Card” for many phones. There may be different instructions for different phones. Follow the specific instructions on how to enter the code into your phone.
  3. Hold “Alt” and type in “mep2.” Enter your code. This should unlock your phone. Note that some phones, like the BlackBerry, do not require a SIM card inside the phone while you unlock it.

  3. Purchase a new SIM card when you plan on changing service providers or if you are traveling.

How to Sync a Smartphone With Google

A smartphone can handle a large number of contacts, which you can enter manually or upload to the phone. Another popular method of adding contacts is to sync the phone with an online contact management system, like the one offered by Google. Google allows you to automatically link your smartphone to your Google account so that they both update with new information added. You can also sync calendar data with your phone in most cases.

  1. Create an account with Google and sign in. Navigate to the “Google Mobile” section of your account (see Resources).
  2. Click the name of the type of smartphone you own from the list of options, such as Blackberry or Apple iPhone, to download any specific details or tools you need to complete this task. The exact process of syncing your smartphone may vary by model (you may need to download software to your computer to help you navigate the syncing process for some phone models).
  3. Click “Settings,” “Preferences” or the similarly named option on your smartphone and open the “Mail” or similarly named option menu. Choose the option to add a new mail account.
  4. Select “Microsoft Exchange” from the list of new account options. Google syncs with smartphones using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync technology. Enter your Google username and password so that the phone can automatically log into your Google account. Enter “” as the server name.
  5. Choose the data that you want to sync between Google and your smartphone. Options include email, contacts and calendar information.
  6. Save your new options and allow the phone some time to contact the Google server. Some smartphones push information from Google (and vice versa) instantly, while others take a few minutes to sync data between the device and online account.

How to Connect a Smartphone to a PC

It's easy to sync your Smartphone to your PC.

How to Protect Your Smartphone From Viruses

Avoid mobile viruses by downloading only trusted apps and anti-virus software.
All smartphone owners should be aware of and concerned about viruses that affect smartphones, but most aren’t. Only 4 percent of mobile phones use virus protection software, according to Juniper Network Global Threat Center’s Malicious Mobile Threats Report 2010/2011. Personal and identity information such as financial passwords and contact lists — once stored on protected personal computers — now appear on unprotected smartphones. Phones infected with malware, Trojan horses and other viruses leave your phone unusable, send the virus to your contacts or worse: Perpetrators steal usernames and passwords that can lead to identity theft. Protecting your phone is a twofold process; avoid potential viruses and download legitimate virus protection on your phone.

End-User Tips

  1. Open attachments on your phone with the same caution as you do on your computer. This includes attachments in emails and in MMS messages. Don’t open attachments from people you don’t know. Also, don’t open attachments from a contact if the message looks suspicious. Your contact’s phone or computer may be infected with a virus that is emailing or messaging itself to everyone on his contact list, including you.
  2. Watch for suspicious links sent through email or text messages. Never click on questionable links. Like attachments, these may be sent by people you don’t know who are posing as individuals on your contact list. If you are suspicious about a link sent to you by a contact, email or text message the sender to ask if he sent the message. He may not know his phone or computer is infected by a virus that is sending messages to his contacts.
  3. Download apps only from legitimate app stores, and read the reviews before buying to make sure there is no buzz about a virus attached with the app. The Malicious Mobile Threats Report finds that as the demand for apps increases, so does the proliferation of viruses, particularly spyware. Viruses can transfer through any type of application, including gaming apps, fake anti-virus apps, fake financial-tracking apps and social networking apps.
  4. Practice safe memory card use. Never share your memory card with another cell phone. An infected memory card can spread a virus to each phone it contacts.
  5. Set the Bluetooth option on your phone to the undiscoverable setting. Some viruses penetrate phones through a Bluetooth connection. This attack is especially tricky; you need only walk by an infected Bluetooth device while your phone is discoverable, and the virus can transfer to your phone. The first documented Bluetooth virus, the Cabir virus, which arrived in 2004, didn’t harm your phone or steal valuable information, but it ran the phone battery down quickly by constantly trying to discover nearby Bluetooth connections through which to spread. Current Bluetooth viruses are more malicious; they steal contact information and disable phones.

Third-Party Apps

  1. Protect your iPhone from malware and other virus infections with anti-virus apps. Choose from a handful of well-known and trusted anti-virus software providers, as some viruses present themselves as inexpensive or free virus software from unknown companies. SmrtGuard Solutions’ Snap Secure app and the Lookout Mobile Security app from Lookout Inc. both protect your iPhone from viruses while backing up your important data and allowing you to track or wipe your iPhone if it’s lost or stolen. McAfee Enterprise Mobility Management from Trust Digital is designed for business environments with multiple mobile devices, including iPhones. Snap Secure, Lookout Mobile Security and EMM are all free downloads at the iPhone App Store. Intego created the Virus Barrier iOS software specifically for the iPhone and iPad to scan for and block any viruses from transferring to your computer when you connect the mobile device to it. Virus Barrier can be downloaded from the App Store for a small fee.
  2. If you own an Android-powered phone, download anti-virus from reliable suppliers to protect your personal information. The Kaspersky Mobile Security app offers find-and-wipe services as well as virus and spam protection. In addition to standard virus scans, Norton Mobile Security can lock your phone to protect personal data during a virus attack or if the phone is lost or stolen. The Bullguard Mobile Security app protects against viruses, identity theft and online fraud, and it offers parental controls, a basic backup and SIM card protection. All these apps are available for download from the Android Market.
  3. Add anti-virus protection for your BlackBerry with Bullguard Mobile Security, which offers a user-friendly online interface that allows you to manage your virus protection and back up information from your phone or your computer. Also useful is SmrtGuard’s Snap Secure app for handy information in addition to virus protection; the app warns how new apps may affect your privacy settings and leave your device vulnerable to virus attack. The app also provides BlackBerry users with Personal Guardian service, with which you create a panic button that sends out a text message or phone call with your location. The NetQin Mobile Security for BlackBerry app provides two levels of protection: one local for your phone and one cloud based. It offers real-time virus scanning and a backup of all your data. Download Snap Secure from the BlackBerry App World. Bullguard Mobile Security and NetQin Mobile Security are available for download at the developers’ websites.
  4. Even if your Windows computer is protected with anti-virus software, you still need a separate mobile app for your phone. Find Windows Mobile virus protection with the Kaspersky Mobile Security app, which offers a full range of protection not available in its BlackBerry and Android apps. These additional features include data encryption and parental controls. In addition to virus protection, the Bullguard Mobile Security app offers a spam filter and firewall protection with its Windows Mobile apps, which are not offered with its Android and BlackBerry versions. NetQin’s NQ Mobile Security for Windows Phone app offers anti-virus scans and data backups as well as private and safe-browsing capabilities. NQ Mobile Security is available from the Windows Phone Marketplace. Kaspersky Mobile Security and Bullguard Mobile Security can be downloaded from the developers’ websites.

How to Scan With a Smartphone

Use apps on your smartphone to scan documents as PDFs.
Using one of a few possible smartphone apps, you can convert pictures you take of documents on your smartphone directly to a PDF. This way, you do not have to search for a scanner if you need to put a physical signature on a document before sending it back to someone. Some of the apps are free for a trial period; some are free if you are willing to tolerate watermarks on the document or advertisements on the app screen when you’re using it. CamScanner, DocSanner and Google Drive have versions for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. There are many other alternative apps, which may work only on one of those platforms, but will produce similar results.

  • Launch CamScanner, scroll through any startup screens and tap “Use Now.” Tap the camera icon to get into camera mode and tap the camera icon again to take a picture of the document. Tap the check mark if you are satisfied with your picture. Use your finger to drag the borders around the picture to best fit your page. Tap the check mark icon on the bottom right again when you are finished. CamScanner will then crop and apply a contrast filter to the picture to help make it best for a PDF. Tap the check mark icon again to finish. Tap the camera icon again to add more pages to this document or tap the Share icon to send it via email, text message or some other means.

  • Launch DocScanner and tap the camera icon to get into camera mode. By default DocScanner may have the “Auto detect” mode enabled, which is meant to automatically detect the borders of your document. If this is not working for your particular document, tap the gear icon to open the settings menu. Tap the disable auto crop icon to turn off this setting. Tap the settings icon again to return to camera mode. The document appears inside the icon at the bottom right. Tap the page and you will see the gallery of documents. Tap your document, then tap the Share icon, which is in the top right corner. Tap “PDF,” then tap “Choose application” to choose which method you want to use to send your document from your phone.

Google Drive

  • If you do not have a Google account, go to and sign up for a free account, then download the Google Drive app to your phone. Launch the Google Drive app and enter your account information as required. On the main My Drive screen, tap the camera icon on the bottom right. Tap the button to take the picture of your document. Tap the “+” icon to add more pages or tap the check mark icon to finish. Your document is converted to a PDF and automatically saved to your Google Drive account if you are connected to Wi-Fi. From Google Drive you are able to send your file via email.

Send the Picture to Your Computer

  • If the other options are not suitable for you, you can simply take a picture of your document and then transfer that picture to your computer. Both Windows and Apple computers have the ability to save files as a PDF. Once the picture is on your computer, open either Microsoft Word or Apple Pages and insert your picture into a document. The Print menu on either program will then allow you to save your file as a PDF.

The Negative Effects That Medical Technology Has on Patients

Technology had advanced medical services to both positive and negative effect.
Medical technology covers the wide range of tools now being used to diagnose, treat or generally manage health. This may include medical equipment, advanced surgical or medical procedures, electronic records and medical-related software. Many of these advances have improved quality of life and helped lengthen life spans. However, medical technology can also present problems for the patient. Knowing the risks can help patients become more knowledgeable consumers for their health and overall well-being.

Impersonal or Minimized Care

  • Technology is only as good as the person who programs it and the medical personnel who use it. A health care provider who relies too heavily on technology may spend too little time getting to know the patient as an individual and too much time interacting with the equipment. For example, there is a danger that they may miss a symptom that doesn’t fall into the “black and white” parameters of an electronic medical record.

Negative Results

  • Many technological procedures are life saving but each has its own risk for the patient. For example, surgical procedures, radiation therapy or chemotherapy can offer benefits but could lead to negative effects. This has long been true with any medical procedure since even simple aspirin can be used inappropriately; but technology should always be evaluated for risk versus reward.

Increased Costs

  • New technological advances can lead to higher patient costs due to the research and marketing related to bringing it to market as well as profit for the creator and manufacturer. As technology advances, usually so does the cost, especially if it offers patients a solution that was not previously available to them. While this may be a blessing for conditions that are newly treatable or chronic, the new technology will result in additional and long-term costs.

Inappropriate Use

  • Much of medical technology is sold via manufacturers’ sales representatives whose job is to sell the product. They may appropriately make the health care provider aware of a new option. But they may also use an incentive that encourages a medical provider to use the technology or new product whether of not it is in the best interest of that specific patient.

Invasion of Privacy

  • New computerized technology, such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR) stores and manages patient information to share with the patient and all health care providers. The medical history can include test results, medications, billing information and much more. It’s a convenience but also offers the potential for misuse, resulting in a loss of personal data and patient privacy.

The Advantages of High-Tech Gadgets

The Advantages of High-Tech Gadgets
High-tech gadgets and devices exist in almost every industry. Medical industries use software to treat some tumors, business sectors use PDAs and small payment processors to enhance work productivity, and digital reading devices such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony E-Reader allow individuals to read on-demand books and literature. The sticker price of high-tech gadgets is usually high, but gadget owners have the convenience to use these types of devices just about anywhere

  • The majority of high-tech gadgets are extremely mobile and portable; this gives the owner the chance to use it at any time and any place. Consider netbooks that weigh an average of 2 to 3 lbs., and fit conveniently into small carrying cases or backpacks. High-tech gadgets that use GPS (global positioning system) technology are the ultimate mobile devices, which allow individuals to see and plan travel routes instantly. Wristwatches have also come a long way with high-tech features. Stanley/Brando manufactures a watch with a built-in LED flashlight, while Fossil produces a high-tech watch with a built-in Palm Operating System and a touch screen. All of these mobile, high-tech gadgets allow for convenience.

  • There are lots of high-tech gadgets that contain multiple capabilities. Gadget owners can use just one or two devices to handle many tasks. For example, PDAs (personal digital assistants), some mp3 players and other similar smartphone devices use mobile operating systems and user interfaces to allow for Internet surfing, voice communications and task scheduling. In many of these high-tech devices, wireless technology–a protocol that provides instant connectivity and communications–gets built into laptop computers, mobile PDAs, cell phones, and e-readers like the Amazon Kindle.

Personal Productivity

  • High-tech gadgets increase personal and professional productivity. Employees connect to the office from a home computer with secure VPN (virtual private networking) technology. Some sales people use PDAs, mobile computers and other high-tech devices to submit work orders and contact business associates. Sales transactions can even be instantly completed with the use of convenient devices like the Square–a mobile credit card reader just about 1 inch long that connects to most mobile devices. Business professionals and college students are two consumer groups that use high-tech gadgets to finish projects and collaborate with others through mobile technologies while at home, in the dorm or at the office.

  • High-tech gadgets pave the way for new devices to be produced. Computer processors are made faster with the use of two, three and four CPUs (central processing units) to enhance efficiency and speed. Technology companies and inventors continually research and find ways to tweak current high-tech gadgets in order to make processing more efficient, and expand the capabilities of consumer and business products.

How to Study for the Certification Exam for Medical Assistants

Certification as a medical assistant may lead to a health care job.
To become certified as a medical assistant you must enroll in and complete a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. After completion of the program you may take the certified medical assistant exam. The test consists of 200 questions and is taken within a three hour and 15 minute time frame.

  1. Review the Certification Examination Content Outline. The outline indicates the topics the examination will cover. The outline divides the topics into three major groups and 26 sub-groups. Find the outline on the American Association of Medical Assistants website.
  2. Look over any notes you took while attending your accredited medical assistant training program. Focus on notes that revolve around the topics outlined in the exam outline.
  3. Purchase a examination preparation guide. The books can be found through most local book stores or online. Medical assistant exam preparation books often include a detailed review of test topics and practice tests.
  4. Complete practice tests in preparation for the exam. Practice tests can be found online or in examination preparation guides.

How to View My Medical History

Every American has the right to access his medical records upon request.
Under federal law, you have the right to view your medical history in the form of medical records. The 2003 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA, “requires health care providers, health plans, and health care clearinghouses to allow you access to your medical records,” according to Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. HIPAA applies only to organizations that keep electronic medical records. In addition, some states have medical records privacy laws on the books. If your state does have such laws and you are denied access to your history, you may have more than one avenue of recourse.

  1. Request your medical records in writing. Putting your request in writing allows you to provide specifics and allows you and your practitioner to keep a record of the request. Include the dates you were treated. If you do not want to see all of your medical records, ask for specific test results or doctor’s notes, for example. Send your request by mail; most offices will also accept the request by fax.
  2. Pay the administrative fees. Most physicians and hospitals will require you pay a fee to cover the cost of photocopying your records and an additional fee if you want the records mailed to you. If the fees sound high to you, check your state medical privacy law to see if there is a provision that places limits on the fees for copying and mailing medical records. If there is, and you feel your doctor’s fees are not reasonable, follow up with the appropriate state agency.
  3. Give the facility at least 30 days to respond. If you have not heard from your practitioner within 30 days, contact the office. Under HIPAA, your doctor has 30 days to get back to you; the law provides for another 30 days only if a good reason is provided. If you find after 30 days that the records have been copied but not mailed, it may be easier to simply pick them up. Picking them up will also allow you to avoid a mailing fee.

What Kinds of Equipment Do Registered Nurses Use?

Today’s nurses are often equipped with the biggest, newest and latest technological equipment to perform their jobs, but they also rely on standard equipment and tools that have been around for decades. Depending on location, specialty and facility, nurses around the world are best able to perform their duties with a handful of tools that are easily carried in a pocket, on a cart or at a nurse’s station. Understanding the basic equipment or tools of the trade for a nurse takes some of the mystery out of their job functions and enables patients to help their nurses monitor their progress in inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • One of the most common and visible tools of the nursing trade is the stethoscope. The stethoscope is a versatile piece of equipment that’s used to check heart and lung sounds, as well as bowel and other organ sounds.

  • Thermometers come in all shapes and sizes. There are oral and rectal thermometers and tympanic thermometers, which are now commonly used in hospitals around the world. The tympanic thermometer is accurate in about 2 seconds, which saves nurses time and offers a noninvasive way to get a temperature from patients of any age. With probe covers, the tympanic thermometer can be used directly in the ear with little fuss or stress. Of course, the good old thermometers have been replaced with digital readouts, making it a lot easier for patients and nurses to record reliable temperature readings.

  • A good pair of medical scissors is present in any good nurse’s pocket. These scissors are handy when cutting bandages or clothes, as their ends are blunted and curved in an upward angle to protect tender skin.

  • Yes, that’s a fine word to wrap your tongue around, so most nurses and medical personnel call this handy gadget a pulse ox. It’s a device that when placed on a finger can record the oxygen level and even the pulse of the person wearing it. Readings are produced in about a minute or less and are a great way for nurses to quickly check O2 (oxygen) levels in all patients.

  • Calculators to check drug dosage rate flows, formulas and dosages are also handy and can slide easily into a lab jacket or scrub pocket. Accurate dosage and drip rates are essential for nurses, so small digital pocket calculators are perfect for the job.

Other Tools of the Trade

  • Syringes, blood pressure cuffs and bladder readout machines are also often used daily by nurses, but such equipment is usually kept in the med room, the nurse’s station or at specific locations within a medical facility. Of course, nurses are welcome to purchase their own blood pressure cuffs or other portable equipment and bring it to work with them every day if they wish.

  • It’s important to have a sturdy and comfortable pair of shoes for nurses, who are on their feet all day. Scrubs, lab jackets and other uniform pieces should be comfortable and durable. Scrubs, both bottoms and tops, are available in a wide variety of materials and patterns to suit just about any fancy. Dress codes of medical facilities often enable nurses to show their own personality through their uniform choices and styles.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Electronic Gadgets

Gadgets make many things more efficient.
Enabling LifestylesElectronic gadgets have seen a revolution. In the past, most gadgets served a single purpose: Phones called people; TVs showed television shows. Now, gadgets are evolving to be multi-purpose tools. Mobile phones today not only call, but most allow texting, email, web-surfing, and a host of other features. These gadgets, whether a computer or a phone, allow people to stay more organized, stay in constant communication, and gain access to the outside world much more easily than was ever possible without electronic gadgetry.

Electronic gadgets have made it easier to conduct business.

Business and WorkLaptop computers, personal digital assistants, known as PDAs, and smart phones eliminate the need for offices for some people. They make work possible that was once impossible without a physical office-hub. Now meetings can be held from nearly any location with a simple computer, microphone, and Internet access. The ability of websites to be established as hubs, working similarly to virtual stores, has also led to a revolution for consumers, opening up the world of Internet retail. The low cost of starting an online-based business as compared to a physical business also helps push entrepreneurialism.

The need for offices has been eliminated for some people.
Time and Health ConcernsElectronic devices are designed to save time and make people more efficient. For many people, though, the increase in new inventions take up more time. An efficient gadget might actually provide someone with less free time due to the assortment of additions it’s providing. Regarding health, concerns have been raised about cell phones and brain tumors; however, according to the National Cancer Institute, as of 2011, no link has been determined to exist. Another health concern is that gadgetry tends to require immobility. Video games commonly take some of the blame for rises in childhood obesity during recent decades.

Video games are taking the blame for the childhood obesity trend.
Environmental ImpactA commonly overlooked negative side to electronic gadgetry is their environmental impact. Non-biodegradable, non-recyclable electronic gadgets often end up in landfills or are shipped to crude facilities in developing countries. Without safe and efficient means of recycling, electronic wastes are burned to salvage bits of metal – releasing toxic substances into the atmosphere, polluting the immediate environment and potentially nearby water resources as well. The rapid increase in the number of electronic gadgets, as projected by the International Energy Agency, not only means greater carbon dioxide emissions but also increasing energy demands that will need to be met.

Electronic waste is harmful to the environment.

Instruments Used to Hear a Heartbeat

There are a number of instruments used to hear a heartbeat.
A heartbeat, when it’s pumping at the proper rate, is easy for a doctor to recognize. And when that heartbeat is irregular, it can tell medical professionals a lot about what might be wrong. This is true even of unborn babies, whose heartbeats are regularly monitored by both doctors and expectant parents.

  • The purpose of a stethoscope is to listen to sounds made inside the human body. While a stethoscope can be used to listen to the stomach or the lungs, it’s also used to listen to the heartbeat. These instruments have two ear buds connected to a sensitive sound detector that hangs on the end of a connecting cable. The stethoscope is traditionally associated with doctors, and in dramatic productions, the actor playing a doctor often has a stethoscope slung around her neck.

Doppler Instrument

  • A common instrument for listening to the prenatal heart is called the Doppler instrument. This piece of medical equipment sends sound waves into a pregnant woman’s womb. These waves act in a similar manner to sonar waves, and are affected by the sound and force of the fetus’s beating heart. When the fetal heart beats, it changes the reflection of the sound waves and creates a distinctly different sound. Using this method, the doctor and the mother can hear the unborn baby’s heartbeat, as interpreted by the Doppler instrument.

Pre-Natal Monitor

  • Doppler instruments–meant to amplify an unborn baby’s heartbeat from the time the fetus is still very small–are large and expensive. Less expensive versions of this technology are sold for home use, and these devices are simply called pre-natal monitors. The sound waves pre-natal monitors create are less precise and powerful than a those created by a Doppler instrument, so these small instruments are used later in pregnancy (roughly 10 weeks and up) for women who want to be able to monitor their unborn baby’s heartbeat.

Gadgets to Help Senior Citizens

Lend a helping hand to seniors.
Senior citizens have a greater risk of accidentally injuring themselves or not caring for themselves properly due to age, physically disabilities or weakness, illnesses and memory loss. As a result, it is important to equip senior citizens with specialized gadgets that will keep them as safe as possible. Purchasing personal safety equipment can increase the level of independent living possible in advanced age. Assistance gadgets are available to improve quality of life and personal safety for seniors.

Life Guardian Medical Alarms

  • The Life Guardian Medical Alarms website explains that the alarms are designed to provide senior citizens with the ability to directly contact and receive emergency medical assistance without having to reach a telephone. The system is installed in the individual’s home. There is a main console that is placed in a centralized location in the home. The senior citizen wears an emergency band on his wrist. The emergency band has a button that can be pushed if the individual falls or experiences a medical emergency. A medical operator will speak to the individual through the console to determine what help is needed. If the senior citizen is unable to communicate with the operator, emergency medical personnel will be sent directly to the home. The Life Guardian medical alarm allows senior citizens to be independent, but have immediate access to help when necessary.

MedReady Medication Dispensers

  • The Alzheimer’s Store website offers three variations of the MedReady Medication Dispenser. The dispensers can hold 28 medication doses and lock securely in order to prevent accidental overdoses. The dispensers are ideal for senior citizens who have memory problems and need to take medications at certain times of the day in order to treat their health conditions. The dispensers have a built-in alarm system that can be programmed to alert the senior citizen up to four times a day. The MedReady Plus dispenser connects to the phone modem and allows distant caregivers to check that the medication has been taken. The information is also posted online so that it is easy to view and track. If the medication is not taken, emergency medical professionals will be contacted automatically.

Electronic Sensors

  • Technology designed for senior citizens often incorporates gadgets which work even if the user becomes incapacitated and is unable to call for help. Electronic sensors can measure things such as smoke, heat and motion. This data in turn can be used in electronic smoke detectors, to determine whether doors are locked, in pressure sensors for the floor (in case of falling), and for a myriad of other purposes.

Medical ID Bracelets

  • Though not technically a “gadget,” a medical identification bracelet is an essential item to have. The Senior Citizens Association of America website explains that EMTs check for ID bracelets 95 percent of the time when they first respond to an emergency situation. A personalized ID bracelet provides the individual’s name and important medical information. If an elderly person is unconscious or unable to communicate, the EMTs and doctors who treat the individual will be aware of critical information. The SCAA website gives specific examples of medical information that can be found on a bracelet including food allergies, heart problems, diabetes, organ transplants, anemia, stroke risk, seizure disorders and long-term medications. It is critical that medical professionals are aware of a senior citizen’s medical issues in order to treat them safely, effectively and quickly.

How to Prevent Lag in Flash Games in Firefox

Playing online Flash games can help you relax, but not if the experience is marred by unwanted lag. If a Flash game lags, you will experience notable delays between your input and the actions being performed on your screen, which can make playing impossible. If you use the Mozilla Firefox browser for playing these games, you can take some precautions to prevent lag from occurring. The speed of your computer as well as your Internet connection can also play a role in how much lag you experience while playing Flash games.

Reduce Image Quality

  1. Launch Firefox and load the Flash game with which you are experiencing lag.
  2. Right-click anywhere on the Flash game to open a context menu with settings.
  3. Click “Quality” and then select either “Medium” or “Low” to reduce the visual quality of the game. This lessens the load, especially on older systems, and can reduce input lag resulting in more responsive game play.

Enable or Disable Hardware Acceleration

  1. Launch Firefox and load the Flash game with which you are experiencing lag.
  2. Right-click anywhere on the Flash game and then click “Settings” from the context menu.
  3. Click the “Display” tab and then click the check box next to “Enable hardware acceleration.” If enabled, it uses your graphics card to display the Flash game quicker than the Flash player could on its own, which can reduce lag. Disabling this setting if you experience lag can fix the problem by preventing hardware compatibility issues with the Flash player.

Clear the Cache

  1. Launch Firefox and load the Flash game with which you are experiencing lag.
  2. Click the “Advanced” tab and then click “Delete All” in the browsing data and settings section. This clears the local storage and data for Flash content. Reload the Web page with the Flash game to re-download the data, which can improve the lag if it was caused by incorrect or corrupt cache settings.
  3. Right-click anywhere on the Flash game and then click “Global Settings” from the context menu.

Allocate More Cache Space

  1. Launch Firefox and load the Flash game with which you are experiencing lag.
  2. Right-click anywhere on the Flash game and then click “Settings” from the context menu.
  3. Click the “Local Storage” tab and then drag the slider to the right to increase the amount of information that the currently active Flash game can store on your computer. This can improve the lag as the data is stored on your computer instead of loaded from the site.

Free Up Resources

  1. Close any Firefox tabs that are not necessary while playing the Flash game. The fewer tabs you have the more memory is available for the game.
  2. Click the “Firefox” button and then click “Extensions. Click the “Disable” button next to any extensions that are not essential.
  3. Close any memory intensive programs such as Photoshop, media players or other open browsers to free up more resources for the Flash game.
  4. Finish or stop any active downloads that could be tying up bandwidth and resources.
  5. Run an anti-virus and malware scan to ensure that there are no malicious programs running on your computer which can cause performance issues.

Computer Gaming Effects on Academic Performance

Computer Gaming Effects on Academic Performance
The computer and video game industry has grown considerably over the past decade. In 2005 a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation: “Generation M: Media in the Lives of 8-18 year-olds”, showed that over 80 percent of teenagers had a video game player in their home. The widespread use of video games has led to a series of questions. The most common question discusses the effects that the video/computer games have on the academic performance of the gamer. Researchers have found that each situation should be handled independently because the effects vary from individual to individual.

Positive Effects

  • Many people focus on the negative effects of these games and fail to see the opportunity for learning and growth. According to Raise Smart Kids: “The Good and Bad Effects of Video Games” there are several positive effects that come from spending time playing video games. Most games do not teach kids math, history and other subjects, however, they do provide students indirect opportunities to learn principles that can help them in their academic pursuits. Certain types of video games can help train kids to follow instructions as well as helping them develop their problem solving and logical thought processes. These skills translate directly to the classroom as students are asked by teachers to complete tasks and are presented problems that require them to use logical problem solving skills. Kids can also learn inductive reasoning and hypothesis testing. Games will often present them with a situation that needs to be solved and this causes the kids to have to develop problem-solving techniques. Before purchasing a video game a parent should talk with a representative at the store to see what the overall premise of the game is to see if it includes elements that will help build these aforementioned qualities.

Negative Effects

  • Although there are some positive effects that are possible form video/computer game use there are mostly negative effects. Several professors conducted a research project to determine the effect of gaming on academic performance. According to the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology: “Gaming Frequency and Academic Performance” individuals who spend two or more hours playing games on a daily basis score lower in every subject than their non-gaming counterparts. By spending a high percentage of time on video games there is not enough time left to spend in studying for classes. The study found that there was “not a single significant positive correlation between gaming and academic performance.”

  • According to a list of statistics produced by Media Family: “Effects of Video Game Playing on Children” roughly 97 percent of kids played video games in 2008. In 2006 45 percent of kids were regular gamers, which means that they played for two or more hours on a daily basis. The high number of kids shows the importance of learning to choose games that will help strengthen and push the intellect of the child playing.

How to Use the SNES Game Genie

The Game Genie for the Super Nintendo is a gaming peripheral developed by Galoob in 1992 that enabled gamers to apply cheat codes to their favorite SNES games. It gave players the opportunity to have infinite lives, unlimited ammunition, invincibility and many more attributes to help win any SNES game. The Game Genie functioned by joining together with a Super Nintendo game, and then loaded into the SNES system. From there, a sequence of digits are inputted to use codes that manipulated the parameters of an SNES video game.

  1. Insert an SNES game in the slot on top of the Game Genie. Insert the Game Genie into the cartridge dock of the SNES system. Ensure that the toggle switch in front is set to the upper position.
  2. Turn on your SNES system and wait for the green light on the Game Genie to appear. Once the green light shows the Game Genie menu will appear with a series of numbers from 0 through 9 and letters A through F.

  4. Continue Step 3 until you have entered a code that is eight digits long. You can input a total of 5 lines of game codes. When you are finished, press “Start” to begin your game with the desired cheats activated.

The Disadvantages of Gadgets on Students

The Facebook generation uses many gadgets every day.

Modern technologies like television and computers provide identifiable educational advantages, such as greater access to information and more compelling presentations of that information. Over-use of technology, though, especially such gadgets as cell phones, iPods and video games, presents a whole range of problems which may interfere with a student’s ability to learn and attend to lessons.

Social Networking

  • Students who use their computers or cell phones to participate in social networking sites may post material considered inappropriate by school authorities. They may also develop an unfavorable reputation based on those pictures or comments. Pictures of misbehavior can adversely affect their chances of getting into the university of their choice or of getting a job.

  • It is easy to become addicted to gaming, texting, talking on the phone or socializing online. Some students may attempt to do this in class, which disrupts their learning, and at home it detracts from study time. Kids putting in long hours on their gadgets will give less attention to assignments and may be irritable when they are away from their gadgets. They might also sleep less, which can slow down their thinking the next day.

  • In the past, children and young people filled up their free time by reading books, socializing, or engaging in active, creative play. A fixation on gadgets reduces participation in of all these, especially the aspect of creativity. Digital worlds can be vast, but they are always structured, not requiring the imagination and inventiveness of unstructured play. Some children become less creative and less able to entertain themselves.

  • Persistent use of high-tech gadgetry can lead to a slew of health problems for young and old alike. A sedentary lifestyle discourages exercise and encourages obesity. The back-lit screens used for computers, iPhones and video games can cause eye problems. Walking around everywhere with music blaring directly into your ears brings on headaches and hearing difficulties. The net effect of all these things, plus the pressure of immediate responses to everything, can become stressful.

Your Brain

  • In The Mail Online, neurologist Susan Greenfield says that technology use changes our brains and not always for the better. Just thinking about doing something — such as performing an action in a video game — affects your brain nearly as strongly as actually doing it. There is circumstantial evidence linking a rise in Attention Deficit Disorder with increased use of video games, causing many scientists to worry that children may do permanent harm to their brains by spending too much time interacting with such gadgets.

What Is a Pear Phone?

A Pear phone is an imaginary gadget, the fictional counterpart of an Apple iPhone. They’re seen in some shows on the Nickelodeon network. To avoid unwanted product placement, the shows’ creators use a pretend brand, Pear, in place of real-life brands. Pear phones are a recurring theme in shows created by executive producer Dan Schneider.

The Pear Company

  • Fictional counterparts of familiar products of are a way for the creators of TV shows to make the shows seem more real without having to license real products from major companies or open themselves to accusations of product placement. The Pear company lets shows such as “iCarly” have story lines about gadgets without having to feature products from real firms like Apple or Microsoft. For example, if the story line calls for a working laptop, the actors can use a real one with any trademarks covered up by Pear logos from the props department.

The Shows

  • “ICarly” is a show about a girl named Carly and her friends who make their own hit webcast. The show’s name, “iCarly,” is a parody of Apple products such as the iPhone and iPod. In “Victorious,” the central character, Tori Vega, accidentally enrolls in a performing arts school and finds out she loves it. “Zoey 101” follows Zoey and her younger brother as they enroll together at an elite boys school that’s just begun to admit girls. In all of these shows, the Pear company makes most of the electronics.

Creating the Pear Phone

  • The creators of “Victorious” needed a fictional brand of smartphone for one of their story lines, and so the Pear phone was introduced. Schneider records on his blog that he thought it would be interesting for the phone to actually be shaped like a pear; the prop man was able to create a pear-shaped phone prop.

Fan Response

  • Schneider notes that fans frequently ask where they can buy a Pear phone; they don’t exist in real life. There’s a fan-created Pear phone website,, where the Pear phone is advertised as having ridiculous capabilities — such as a weather station that can calculate the local pollen count. There’s even a video from the creators of the site demonstrating home-made Pear phone fan art.

How to Build Spy Gadgets

How to Build Spy Gadgets

Kids love playing spy. Gadgets don’t have to be expensive, though. Spy gadgets are easy to make using household items. Kids can play spy using a homemade spy ID card, a book safe or a keyhole spy tool. Spy gadgets can be made by the kids themselves or by an adult. Other fun uses for spy gadgets are props, party decorations or costume accessories.

Spy ID Card

  1. Paste the child’s picture on the left side of the index card. Allow the glue to dry before adding detail to the spy card.
  2. Use colored markers to write the name of the spy agency at the top of the card. Create a logo for the spy agency. The logo can be placed in the lower right or upper right-hand corner of card. Place it on the same side as the child’s picture.
  3. Create a line for the child’s code name. Draw a line on the right side of the front of the card–the same side the picture is on. Write the words “Code Name” above the line. Let the child choose their own code name. Underneath that line write the words “Real Name.” On this line, let the child write their real name.
  4. Flip the card over. On the back of the card, in the upper, left-hand corner, write the words “Issued by the (agency name) to the above mentioned agent. Skip a line, and write “This agent is active in covert operations. Agent’s identity to be protected at all times.” Skip another line and write, “Use codename in all situations.”
  5. Draw a black box in the right side of the back of the card large enough for a thumb print. Place the child’s thumb print in the inside of the box. Markers can be used for this or an ink pad if one is available.

Book Safe

  1. Open the book to page five. With a pencil and a ruler, draw a rectangle on the right page. Leave one 1 inch between the rectangle and the edge of the page.
  2. Cut the rectangle out of the pages using a craft knife or box cutter. Cut through the majority of the pages.
  3. Hide secret, spy items in the book safe. Place it back on the shelf, and the book is undetectable.

Keyhole Spy Gadget

  1. Cut a thick piece of black paper to equal the circumference of the clear marble. Wrap the paper tightly around the marble, creating a cylinder. Tape the cylinder together. The marble should be sticking out of one end of the cylinder.
  2. Stick the cylinder in large keyholes to look around a room. Look through the end without the marble. The image, because of the marble, will be upside down, however, because of way light reflects through the marble.
  3. Squeeze the keyhole gadget through tight spaces to spy around the house.

How Does a Smartphone Work?

Close-up of a hand holding an iPhone

Smartphones combine cellular radio technology with specially designed processors. As smartphones have evolved, app developers have found new, ingenious ways to use hardware and wireless connectivity to make information instantly available to users. Larger, more accurate touch displays enable multi-window computing with simultaneous input from all 10 fingers. Efficient multitasking and abundant memory enable recently used apps to reside in a stack without slowing down performance.

Voice, SMS and MMS

  • The first mobile phones needed huge batteries to transmit radio signals to towers that may have been many miles away. They relied on 1G radio technology to communicate over a relatively narrow bandwidth. Voice and SMS communication worked in much the same way as today, except that 2G radio technology introduced cellular towers and modern protocols such as GSM and CDMA, enabling mobile phones to use much less power. SMS communication works efficiently over a low-bandwidth connection by limiting messages to 160 bytes, and with the introduction of 3G technology, MMS can use the same protocol to deliver multimedia messages of unlimited size.

Touch and Accelerometer Input

  • A smartphone’s accelerometer measures the amount of static or dynamic force felt by the device and makes this information available to the operating system. While not all apps use accelerometer input, the accelerometer constantly polls the device’s current position with respect to the Earth so that apps can retrieve it when needed. Most apps listen for touch input in the form of taps or gestures and execute program commands when the user interacts with the display in a certain way. For example, slowly sliding your thumb across the screen may not trigger a page flip, but sliding it more quickly generates an acceleration value high enough to flip the page.

Camera and Microphone Input

  • Most of the time, a smartphone’s camera takes pictures, and its microphone records your voice during a phone call. App developers have also found creative ways to incorporate these input devices into useful software, such as QR code scanners and music identification services. A QR code is a digital code similar to a bar code, but with vertical as well as horizontal information, and a QR code scanner is a function that takes a QR code as input and produces product information, an HTTP link or some other information as output. Music identification services process a song snippet from a user’s microphone input and match it with results in a database. With high-speed wireless Internet, the user immediately receives results from the service, and from these results, she may be able to download a song or follow a QR code link in a Web browser.

3-D Video Acceleration

  • As smartphone processor architecture has evolved, more complex software has become feasible, such as 3-D video gaming and hardware-accelerated graphics. Companies such as ARM, NVIDIA and Qualcom produce powerful CPUs and integrated GPUs that support 3-D video frameworks and use relatively little power. High-performance multi-core CPUs, such as the Snapdragon S3, achieve high clock speeds, low power consumption and low heat output by using a compact 45nm production process. Most mid-range smartphones still use processors with less powerful 65nm process CPUs and include more modest video acceleration.

Treatment for Cheilitis Actinica

Treatment for Cheilitis Actinica
Actinic cheilitis is a common skin lesion that occurs on the lip, usually the lower lip. Also called solar cheilitis, cheilitis actinica and cheilosis actinica, actinic cheilitis is a precancerous condition caused by chronic exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or overexposure to ultraviolet tanning beds or lamps. Actinic cheilitis has the potential for developing into invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Because actinic cheilitis cannot be cured, the best treatment is to remove the affected skin cells.

Appearance of Actinic Cheilitis

  • The lip will appear crusty or ulcerated. The crustiness may extend into the mouth. The skin of the lip may be excessively flaky or scaly. Lesions may be colored red or white. The skin of the lip will be tightly stretched, and there will be little distinction in texture and color between the lip and surrounding facial skin. The lip may appear swollen, and there can be white striations or stripes running throughout the lower lip.

Typical Actinic Cheilitis Patient

  • According to, the National Magazine for Dental Hygiene Professionals, most patients diagnosed with actinic cheilitis are fair-skinned, white males, aged 50 or older; men are twelve times more likely than women to develop actinic cheilitis. Most have a history of smoking and most have substantial sun exposure, working outdoors as construction workers, fishermen or farmers. Patients usually reported having lesions an average of 2.6 years before being diagnosed.

Laser Treatment

  • Actinic cheilitis can be treated surgically using the Er:YAG (erbium:yttrium:aluminum:garnet) laser, carbon dioxide laser, argon laser and neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser. All of these lasers satisfactorily remove the diseased cells and give a good cosmetic result with no lip deformation and little scarring, a short healing period and no loss of sensation.

Photo-dynamic Therapy

  • In photo-dynamic therapy or PDT, a light sensitive chemical is topically applied to the lip lesions or administered to the patient intravenously. Then the lesion is irradiated using a laser or special lamp, causing the photosensitive material to attack and kill the lesions. The method is curative, as long as the lesions are on the surface of the lip rather than deep into lip tissue, and gives a good cosmetic result with little scarring.

Cryosurgery Treatment

  • Cryosurgery involves freezing the lip lesions with liquid nitrogen. The extreme cold destroys the diseased cells. The method is effective at removing the lesions and leaves little scarring.

Electrocautery Treatment

  • Electrocautery uses a hand-held electrode that passes a high-voltage, high-frequency alternating electrical current into the lesion, killing the cells with heat. The technique is effective at removing the diseased cells, but may leave a scar.

Scalpel Vermilionectomy

  • Scalpel vermilionectomy involves removal of the affected cells by shaving the area and sometimes the entire lip. The treatment is effective, but may leave scarring. The newer state-of-the-art Mohs micrographic surgery removes one layer of skin at a time, minimizing scarring and yielding a good cosmetic result.
